Karen Sztajnberg is a Brazilian filmmaker and researcher currently doing her doctoral studies at the Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis.
Her research topic addresses how a certain stripe of South American Cinema warrants the coinage of the term Disempowered Cinema, an active divestment from mastery discourses and power stances as evidenced in the increasingly performative audience engagement events.
By drawing a distinction between disempowered and powerless, impotent, or feeble, the task she placed before her is to unfold how this divestment invigorates what is possible outside of the Western-established power force field, disentwining South American filmmakers from a logic of accumulation.
