Doctoral Studies and Artistic Residency in Southern Sardinia

Karen Sztajnberg has started her PhD research at the University of Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis (ASCA)'s  Department of Media & Culture. Her reserach intersects Spectatorship, Contemporary South American Cinema and Adam Phillips' Theory of Desire.

She has also just been acepted to an artistic residency in the South of Sardinia come Spring'21.


Her written work has been featured in Lynne Sach's Abecedarium: NYC and Ignorância Times online.

The Paradox of Democracy premiere at the São Paulo International Film Festival

Karen participated as Second Unit director at this riveting production from Giros, Brazil which poignantly questions the future of democracies in light of the currently available technologies of participation.

It premiere in São Paulo's biggest international film festival, then went on to screen at Festival do Rio.

Variations opens in Portugal August 22nd

The fiction feature film Variations/ Variações, directed by João Maia, and produced by Fernando Vendrell will open theatrically all over Portugal on 8/22/19.

Karen came on late into the project and acted as co-writer, helping bring it into shooting form. The release is warmly anticipated in Portugal where the musician at the center of this biopic has his strongest following.

Screening The Narrative of Inadequacy at The Secret Life of Crowds

The first two segments of this trilogy were screened as part of a conference by Princeton's Graduate Department of Comparative Literature in April along with two other video-art installations.

It was a sharp series of conferences that I was lucky to be part of.

T.I.N.A Prize: Lisbon here comes The Narrative of Inadequacy

Karen has won the T.I.N.A Prize for her video-art project The Narrative of Inadequacy. This means that Appleton Square Gallery in Lisbon will host a solo show of her work, and during that Karen hopes to shoot the third and final installment of this trilogy.

Karen will start pre-production on this during her summer stay in Lisbon while attending the Disquiet Literary Workshop.
